Program Spotlight: Pedestrian Visibility Workshop

MilWALKee Walks has expanded its presence in Milwaukee area schools through the launch of an innovative Visibility Workshop designed for middle and high school students. This program blends pedestrian safety education with hands-on creativity, offering a fresh and engaging way to connect with youth. Students are invited to reflect on their daily experiences as pedestrians, share concerns, and explore practical strategies for staying safe.

A key feature of the workshop is its interactive crafting component where students design and create their own reflective keychains or bag charms. Using specialized materials, participants are invited to learn a cord-braiding technique while also being encouraged to experiment, innovate, and express their personal style. This creative process not only reinforces the importance of visibility in pedestrian safety but also provides a meaningful outlet for self-expression. Some students even choose to make extra bag charms for friends or family members. This workshop results in a tangible item that students can immediately use to enhance their safety while traveling to and from school.

The program’s inaugural session with the Golda Meir High School Art Club exemplified the workshop’s efficacy. All students were attentive and engaged during the presentation with an active discussion portion, and many opted to spend their free time crafting various reflective creations. Two participants also contributed their own knowledge by teaching program staff and fellow students an additional braiding technique.

This exchange of ideas underscores the program’s strength: empowering young people as both learners and contributors. Nearly all students spend time as pedestrians each day, and many are future drivers. This workshop delivers practical benefits, while supporting safer behaviors and fostering youth creativity, confidence, and community connection.
